Continuing past the main section of the Petrified Forest there are places where there are many places w
ith respective hikes containing large collections of petrified wood. These became more and more scarce and I started to think the scenic part of the park was coming to an end, when all the sudden on both sides we were surrounded by multi-colored hills. This area is aptly named the Painted Desert. The land has eroded by wind and water at varying levels and there is little plant life so the resulting landscape is uniquely beautiful. The layers of rock change color depending on the time period they represent, which is pretty fascinating. But, honestly I just liked them because they are pretty. It seemed with every bend in the road there was an overlook more beautiful than the last, with more layers of hills, or brighter colors. The sun was pretty high in the sky when we were traveling through showering the hills with light so all the colors could be seen. We took our time so the sun was at an angle towards the end of the trip, which made some of the peaks look golden. At this point we have spent a fair am
ount of time in the car. We talk a little less now than when we first started. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not one to drive around without music, but sometimes the silence is nice. Sometimes I will notice that we have been listening to nothing except the steady hum of the engine and the sound of the tires on the road. We have also been listening to the Chronicles of Narnia. Listening to the stories has been kind of fun- we are on book three. We have been pretty good about saving money when it comes to eating. We are not eating out but instead we are trying to eat a variety of things that either come in boxes or that we can keep fresh in the cooler. Fitting everything in the cooler has become quite the puzzle but I think we have mastered the art of it. Tupperware and baggies are key. We discovered sometimes that one by itself is not enough. Water finds a way. Similar to the way water has shaped most of the land out here, it is tricky enough to find its way into our pasta sauce and Reese’s candies. Although we have seen many thunder/lightning storms, dust storms, and rain in the distance we have been pretty lucky so far with only minimal bad weather. This has been especially nice at night.
Although my favorite sound is that of rainfall, I do not want to camp in it any more than I have to. I would have appreciated a little rain while hiking the Guadalupe peak in Texas but that is a whole other store! We have been able to sleep without the rainfly on the tent all except 2 nights. This is especially nice because our tent is mostly all mesh, therefore we can see the stars, mountains, trees… whatever is out there we can see it.
